Building Character Through Connection: Our Restorative Approach at BISC-LP

At BISC-LP, we believe that every challenge is an opportunity to learn, every relationship matters, and every child has the potential to grow. That is why we are excited to launch an enhanced behavior policy rooted in restorative practice!

This approach represents a meaningful shift away from traditional behavior models focused on punishment and compliance and toward a philosophy centered on relationships, reflection, and personal responsibility. Rather than asking, “What rule was broken?” we encourage children to consider, “Who was affected, and how can I make things right?”

By working with children rather than doing things to them, we help students develop the confidence, empathy, and emotional intelligence needed to thrive both in school and beyond. Children learn that mistakes do not define them. Instead, challenges become opportunities to build self-awareness, strengthen relationships, and make positive choices for the future.

Our vision is to empower students to become thoughtful, respectful, and emotionally aware members of our community: young people who reflect on their actions, build meaningful connections, and contribute positively to the world around them. Through strong relationships, clear expectations, and a culture built on growth, we are creating an environment where every child feels valued, heard, and inspired to succeed.

Our restorative approach is guided by a simple framework:

Share (Listen). Care (Understand). Repair (Restore).

When challenges arise, our focus is not simply on assigning consequences. Instead, we help children reflect on what happened, understand the impact of their actions on others, and take meaningful steps to repair relationships. Through these conversations, students develop empathy, resilience, self-awareness, and problem-solving skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

One of the most powerful ways we bring this approach to life is through Community Circle Time. During these sessions, children and adults come together in a safe, structured environment where every voice matters. Students have opportunities to share ideas, listen to others, build understanding, and strengthen relationships. These circles foster communication, empathy, and conflict-resolution skills while creating a strong sense of belonging within the classroom.

A restorative approach equips children with skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Students learn how to communicate effectively, manage emotions, navigate conflict, and build healthy relationships. They become more resilient, reflective, and confident when facing challenges.

Most importantly, restorative practice creates a culture where children feel safe to learn, supported when they make mistakes, and empowered to grow from them. By emphasizing respect, connection, and accountability, we are preparing our students not only for academic success, but for success in life.
