I’ve had the privilege of being at Eton School for 20 years, a lot of that time as Director of Admissions, Marketing, and Communications. Throughout those two decades, I’ve welcomed countless families, attentively listening to their expectations, dreams, and concerns when choosing a school for their children. Every conversation confirms why our school is such a special place.
Eton School wants every student to discover who they are, explore their creativity, and develop a love of learning.
We truly believe that curiosity is the starting point of meaningful learning. It's the spark that makes students ask questions, explore possibilities, and seek answers. We live in a rapidly changing world, where the ability to question, research, and think critically is just as important as the knowledge acquired in a classroom.
When a Question Opens Up a World of Possibility
Curiosity invites us to pay attention, explore new ideas, and dare to test what we think we know about the world.
That's why in our school we understand that learning is much more than just memorizing information. Learning is discovering, experimenting, and building knowledge through real experiences.
Our project approach means each learning experience starts with a provocation specially designed to spark children’s natural curiosity. It’s inspiring to see how students react to an intriguing question or an unexpected experience, immediately formulating hypotheses, sharing ideas, and investigating enthusiastically.
When children are curious, learning happens organically.
Strings of Discovery
A recent example of how curiosity comes alive in our classrooms was the “Strings of Discovery” project. We had a special guest visit all the way from Spain and show the children the viola, helping them discover how it’s different from the violin.
Through play, live music, and the chance to interact with both instruments, students explored how they work, how they sound, and how they harmonize. What started as a musical activity soon became an experience of discovery that had them asking more questions and awakening their imagination.
The experience sparked not only their interest in music, but also their creativity, their observation skills, and their desire to know more.
Learning Together Fosters Curiosity
Curiosity also thrives when we learn as a community. By listening to different perspectives, building on other people’s ideas, and working together, students develop invaluable life skills. They learn to work together, express their thoughts clearly, and value different points of view. These experiences strengthen their confidence and help them understand that learning is a shared process.
As Dr. Michele Borba says in her book Thrivers: “Curiosity must be developed to prepare our children for an uncertain twenty-first century and help them thrive.”
Preparing for a Constantly Changing World
At Eton School we want our students to not only learn to pass exams and reach academic milestones; we want them to develop the desire and the tools to continue learning their entire lives.
When curiosity becomes a habit, students are motivated to explore new ideas, adapt to unknown situations, and face challenges confidently. These are qualities that will help them in school and in their personal and professional futures.
Learning That Never Stops
Curiosity is much more than a childhood trait, it is an ability that boosts innovation, creativity, and personal growth.
That's why we work every day to create experiences that inspire inquiry, research, and discovery. Because we know that when curiosity guides learning, the possibilities are endless.
At Eton, we nurture that curiosity so our students can learn today and continue learning their entire lives.
